Dental Exams

Do you put off dental exams just because you don’t have a toothache, or your teeth and gums “feel” and “look” fine? Did you know it can take a tiny cavity over six months before it reaches the tooth’s inner pulp and causes a toothache?

Visiting your dentist every six months is the best way to prevent cavities and gum disease. If you have dental anxiety, we completely understand your concerns and will help ease your anxiety in every way possible.

Dental X-rays

Digital x-rays allow dentists to view high resolution images to detailed pictures of your teeth and gums. By examining dental x-rays, Cano Dental Dentist can start treating teeth and gum problems immediately.
Dental x-rays for adults are used to detect:

  • Tooth decay that cannot be seen during an oral exam
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Changes in root canals due to infection
  • Abscesses or tumors embedded in the gums

There may also be other reasons your dentist wants to take x-rays of your teeth and gums. Our dentists will always take the time to discuss why x-rays are needed during your appointment and answer your questions about dental x-rays.

Dental Cleaning and Polishing

Brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an anti-bacterial mouthwash twice a day is the best way to keep your teeth and gums healthy. However, good oral hygiene practices can’t replace these benefits of a cleaning:

  • Removes stubborn stains
  • Removes bacteria lodged between teeth that flossing can’t remove
  • Allows your dentist to examine each tooth for signs of decay
  • Significantly reduces your risk of gum disease, a precursor of periodontitis

Our primary job at Cano Dental is keeping your teeth and gums as healthy as possible to avoid the last resort–a tooth extraction. The most common reasons for tooth extraction include:

  • Decay/infection that has compromised the entire tooth
  • Orthodontic treatment (usually to make room for orthodontic appliances)
  • To prepare the mouth to receive a full set of dentures

In many cases, dentists can repair a tooth damaged by minimal to moderate decay with a filling, crown or root canal. But when a tooth is too decayed to be repaired, extraction of the tooth may be necessary.

Oral Surgery

Common types of oral surgery procedures include:

  • Removal of wisdom teeth
  • Dental implants
  • Tooth extraction

Wisdom teeth are often removed because they don’t have enough space to erupt at the back of the mouth. This can lead to overcrowding of teeth and an increased risk for gum disease. In some cases, wisdom teeth are removed after x-rays show they will erupt sideways (impaction).

Preparing for oral surgery depends on your procedure. You may need digital imaging (x-rays) taken for diagnostic purposes. Cano Dental uses the latest in digital imaging technology to ensure the highest quality of dental care for our patients.

Please make sure to include any medications and supplements you are taking on your medical history and follow the instructions you are given before and after your oral surgery.

Preventative Care

When it comes to keeping your mouth healthy, it is important to take part in preventative dental treatments. Acting now to prevent gum issues and tooth decay will prevent possible complications in the future.

Prevention is the best way to preserve your oral health and smile for a lifetime. Taking action now can prevent painful extractions and expensive surgeries later. Our top priority is to make you as comfortable as possible while keeping your teeth as healthy as possible.

Preventative procedures include:

A dental prophylaxis is a cleaning procedure performed to thoroughly clean the teeth and improve gum inflammation. As such, prophylaxis is an important dental treatment for halting the progression of periodontal disease and gingivitis.

Deep Cleaning (SRP)

Our dentist here at Cano Dental complete a deep cleaning, where they remove the bacteria from the foundation of your tooth and is additionally cleans within the gum region that contacts the root. The clinical term is called scaling and arranging, plus does smoothing of the surface.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatments reduces the risk of cavities by remineralizing (rebuilding) weakened enamel and preventing oral bacteria growth.

Oral Cancer Screening

During an oral cancer screening, a dentist will examine your gums, tongue, inside of the cheeks and the roof of your mouth for unusual bumps, spots or lesions. When caught in its early stages, oral cancer can be successfully treated with Moh’s surgery. This procedure involves removal of the top layers of oral tissue containing cancer cells.
